🌊 Six New Junior Open Water Divers: A Milestone Month for Abyss Scuba School's Alternative Provision

At Abyss Scuba School, we believe that every young person deserves the opportunity to succeed, build confidence and discover what they are capable of.

This past month has been particularly special, as we celebrated the achievement of six young people successfully earning their PADI Junior Open Water Diver certifications through our adapted diving programmes.

For many students, this was far more than learning to scuba dive. It was about developing confidence, overcoming challenges, building trust and achieving something they never thought possible.

🤿 A Different Approach to Learning

Our Independent Alternative Provision uses the unique environment of the ocean and water-based activities to engage young people who may struggle in traditional educational settings.

Over a structured 10-week programme, students worked towards their internationally recognised PADI Junior Open Water Diver qualification.

The course was carefully adapted to meet individual needs whilst maintaining the high standards required by PADI, the world's largest diver training organisation.

Throughout the programme, students developed:

  • Confidence and self-belief

  • Communication skills

  • Teamwork

  • Emotional regulation

  • Resilience and perseverance

  • Problem-solving abilities

  • Independence

The transformation we witnessed over the ten weeks was remarkable.

Students who initially lacked confidence in the water gradually became capable, calm and confident divers, successfully completing the same globally recognised certification earned by young divers around the world.

🌊 More Than Just Scuba Diving

At Abyss Scuba School, diving is simply the vehicle we use to help young people achieve wider outcomes.

Alongside scuba training, our students regularly take part in:

  • Beach walks

  • Rock pooling

  • Crabbing sessions

  • Marine conservation activities

  • Water safety education

  • Outdoor learning

  • Team-building challenges

These activities create opportunities for young people to learn, grow and engage in ways that often feel more accessible than a traditional classroom environment.

Being based at Littlehampton Marina gives us direct access to the coast and a unique learning environment that supports both personal and educational development.

🎓 Looking Ahead: A Unique Curriculum Pathway

Following the success of this year's programme, we are excited to announce that from September 2026, Abyss Scuba School will be working in partnership with Farny Close School to deliver an even more ambitious scuba pathway as part of the school's curriculum.

Students will have the opportunity to progress through a structured diving programme from:

PADI Open Water Diver

through to

PADI Junior Divemaster

This provides a clear pathway for young people to develop skills, responsibility, leadership and confidence over a number of years whilst working towards internationally recognised diving qualifications.

The programme will become part of the students' wider educational experience, combining practical learning, personal development and real-world achievement.

We are incredibly proud to be working alongside Farny Close School to deliver something truly unique.
