📸 Underwater Photography Skills: How to Take Better Photos on Every Dive

There's something magical about capturing the underwater world. Whether it's a curious octopus, a graceful ray gliding past, or your dive buddy's first underwater smile, photographs allow us to relive those incredible moments long after we've surfaced.

But underwater photography is very different from taking pictures on land.

At Abyss Scuba School, we regularly help divers improve not only their diving skills but also their underwater photography. The good news? You don't need an expensive camera to take amazing underwater photos—you simply need good diving skills and a few key techniques.

Buoyancy Comes Before the Camera

One of the biggest mistakes new underwater photographers make is focusing on the camera instead of their diving.

The truth is:

The best underwater photographers are usually excellent divers first.

Good buoyancy allows you to:

• Stay still while taking photographs

• Avoid damaging fragile marine life

• Reduce sand and silt being kicked up

• Create sharper images

• Conserve your air

If you're constantly adjusting your position, your photos will almost always suffer.

Get Close to Your Subject

Water reduces colour, contrast and sharpness far more quickly than air.

Instead of using lots of zoom...

Swim closer.

Getting physically closer to your subject means:

• Better colours

• Sharper images

• Less backscatter

• More detail

Remember the golden rule:

If you think you're close enough... get a little closer.

Always do this without disturbing the marine life or touching the seabed.

Use Natural Light

The sun is your best friend underwater.

Whenever possible:

• Keep the sun behind you

• Shoot slightly upwards

• Avoid shooting directly into bright light

This helps bring back natural colours and creates much more vibrant photographs.

Be Patient

Marine life doesn't work to our timetable.

Rather than chasing fish around the reef, stop, relax and wait.

You'll often find marine life becomes curious enough to approach you.

Some of our favourite photographs have been taken simply by sitting quietly and letting nature come to us.

Think About Composition

Great underwater photography isn't just about finding amazing wildlife.

Think about:

• What is your main subject?

• What's happening in the background?

• Can you include your buddy for scale?

• Are there distracting objects in the frame?

Sometimes moving just half a metre can completely transform a photograph.

Respect the Environment

No photograph is worth damaging the underwater world.

Never:

❌ Touch marine life

❌ Move animals into better positions

❌ Stand on reefs

❌ Hold onto wildlife

The best underwater photographers are also some of the best ocean ambassadors.

If an animal swims away, let it.

There will always be another opportunity.

Modern action cameras and waterproof compact cameras are capable of producing fantastic results.

The most important upgrades aren't cameras—they're your diving skills.
