Scuba Diving Portsmouth: PADI Courses at our Dedicated Dive Centre
Looking for scuba diving in Portsmouth?
Start your journey in a facility built entirely around diving — not a hired lane in a leisure centre. Abyss Scuba School sits along the coast in Littlehampton, just over an hour from Portsmouth, and it's where Hampshire divers come when they want to learn properly.
Why Portsmouth Divers Choose Abyss Scuba School
Portsmouth has one of the richest maritime histories in the world — and some of the most rewarding diving on the South Coast waiting just beyond the harbour mouth. For divers from Portsmouth, Gosport and Fareham looking to unlock that underwater world, Abyss Scuba School provides the professional PADI training to get you there. Our dedicated facility in Littlehampton is a short coastal drive away, and it's a world apart from anything available closer to home.
A facility Exclusively for diving
In Portsmouth, pool training for scuba courses typically happens in hired lanes at public leisure centres — time-limited, shared with the public, and shaped around other people's schedules. At Abyss, the pool exists for one reason only: scuba training. There are no lane swimmers, no closing times, and no rushing.
Our pool — and why it matters for nervous divers
Our private heated pool has a viewing window, which is genuinely unique. For first-time divers from Portsmouth who are nervous about being underwater, having the option for family or friends to watch through the glass from poolside makes an enormous difference to confidence. It's a feature most dive centres — anywhere — simply don't have.
Everything in one place, on the coast
Theory, pool training, kit retail, cylinder fills and servicing — all in one marina location on the West Sussex coast. No splitting your training day across two sites, no lugging equipment between venues. Portsmouth is a busy city; your training days with us are calm ones.
No clock-watching
Hired pools run to strict time slots. If a skill needs more practice, the answer at a leisure centre is often "sorry, time's up." Because our pool is private, we move at your pace. That matters especially if you're travelling from Portsmouth — you won't have driven an hour to be rushed.
The drive is easier than you think
The A27 from Portsmouth to Littlehampton is a straightforward coastal route — around 65 miles and just over an hour in typical conditions. Most of our Portsmouth students tell us they stopped noticing the journey after their first visit. Free on-site parking right outside the marina means your day starts the moment you arrive.

What Awaits Portsmouth Divers After Qualifying
Portsmouth sits at the gateway to some of the most historically significant diving in the UK. The Solent holds a remarkable range of sites — from WWII wreckage including Mulberry Harbour remains, tanks and aircraft, through to protected historic vessels such as HMS A1 and HMS Invincible that are diveable with the appropriate permissions. The Invincible herself lies barely three miles from the Portsmouth waterfront: a French warship captured by the Royal Navy in 1747, whose revolutionary hull design influenced British shipbuilding right up to the era of Trafalgar.
Marine life in the Solent includes pink fan coral, pollock, blennies, pipefish, cuttlefish, wrasse, lobsters, rays and a wide variety of flatfish — and if conditions are right, dolphins on the way to the site.
Your PADI Open Water certification is the key to all of it. Once you've completed your training at Abyss, you'll have the skills and qualification to explore these waters — and our regular guided sea dives along the Sussex coast are there whenever you want to dive with people you already know and trust.
We also serve divers from Brighton and Southampton.
