Looking for scuba diving in Southampton?

There are training options closer to home — but if you want a private heated pool, personal instruction and a facility that only does one thing, Abyss Scuba School in Littlehampton is worth the hour along the coast. Here's why Southampton divers make the trip.

Why Southampton Divers Choose Abyss Scuba School

Southampton has a strong local diving scene and a growing number of training options — so why do divers from the city make the trip to Abyss? Because there's a meaningful difference between training in a private, dedicated dive school and completing a course wherever a pool slot can be found. For those who want to learn in the right environment the first time, Abyss Scuba School in Littlehampton is where that experience exists — around an hour from Southampton along the M27 and A27.

  • Private and personal — not a large commercial operation

Southampton's largest dive centres pride themselves on scale. Abyss takes a different approach: small groups, personal instruction, and a facility where the instructors know your name before your second session. If you want to be a number in a large operation, there are closer options. If you want to actually learn, come to Abyss.

  • A pool that belongs to the school

Our heated pool is private — no public sessions, no shared lane bookings, no leisure-centre timetables to work around. For Southampton divers who've looked at training options locally, you'll know that pool time is often the limiting factor. At Abyss, pool time is built around you, not around a multi-use facility schedule.

  • A viewing window — unique to Abyss

Our pool includes a viewing window at water level, a feature almost no other dive school in the South has. Parents watching a child's first underwater breaths, partners supporting a nervous first-timer — the window changes the experience completely. It's a small detail that makes a significant difference, and it's something you simply won't find at a leisure centre.

  • One site for everything

Theory, pool training, equipment retail, cylinder fills, kit servicing — all at the same marina location in Littlehampton. No driving between a training venue and a dive shop. Southampton divers tell us they expected the journey to feel like a compromise; most say it felt like an upgrade.

  • Calm, unhurried learning — and an easy drive

The M27 and A27 route from Southampton to Littlehampton is one of the South's most straightforward coastal drives — typically around an hour to an hour and twenty minutes. You arrive at a quiet marina with free parking outside the door, not a city-centre car park at peak time. For many of our Southampton students, the drive itself has become part of why they enjoy their training days.

🤿 Beyond the Pool

Once you've mastered your skills, the adventure continues. We run regular sea diving trips off the Sussex and Hampshire coast and from our local marina. We also use specialist inland sites including Vobster Quay and Stoney Cove for year-round training and advanced skills development.

👋 Join the Community

Becoming an Abyss diver means joining a thriving community. Our active dive club meets for local shore dives, boat trips, and social events — and our WhatsApp community connects hundreds of divers across the South. Plus, you can join us on our escorted overseas holidays to explore world-class reefs with the instructors you already know and trust.

Southampton's Diving Community — and Where Your Certification Takes You

Southampton has long had a thriving diving scene. Clubs based around the Solent dive regularly around the Isle of Wight and all along the Hampshire and Dorset coastline, with easy access to boat diving south of the island and excellent shore diving at sites like Swanage Pier and Chesil Beach further west. Local wrecks — including the Valentine Tanks with their lobsters, cuttlefish and shoals of bib — are accessible to newly qualified divers and offer a genuine taste of what UK diving has to offer.

Beyond the Solent, Vobster Quay in Somerset and Stoney Cove in Leicestershire provide excellent inland diving year-round — both sites that Abyss regularly visits with students and club members. And for those who want to take their diving overseas, we run escorted group holidays to some of the world's best reef destinations, led by the instructors you'll have trained with from day one.

Your PADI Open Water certification is your entry point to all of it. Earn it at Abyss, and the entire South Coast — and beyond — opens up.

We also serve divers from Brighton and Portsmouth.
